Level 1 Inspection

The inspection is confined to the easily accessible and visible sections of the fireplace and chimney. It is not comprehensive or technically exhaustive. The examination is limited to a visual assessment of accessible areas, including the chimney's exterior, interior, parts of the appliance, and the chimney connection. The inspector will assess the overall structure of the chimney and its connections to appliances, stoves, and heating systems. Additionally, the inspector will check for improper installation, obstructions, and combustible deposits. It is recommended that that all fireplaces, fuel-burning stoves, and chimneys should undergo inspection by a certified inspector or chimney sweep prior to their initial use and at least annually.

Level 2 Inspection

Specialized tools, such as demolition equipment, are not needed to access doors, panels, or coverings during a Level 2 inspection. This level of inspection also involves a visual examination using video scanning or alternative methods to inspect the internal surfaces and joints of all flue liners within the chimney. No removal or destruction of permanently attached elements of the chimney, building structure, or finish is mandated for a Level 2 inspection.

If a Level 1 or Level 2 inspection reveals a potential hidden hazard that requires special tools to access concealed areas of the chimney or flue, a Level 3 inspection is advised. A Level 3 inspection specifically assesses the proper construction and condition of concealed sections of the chimney structure and flue. To complete a Level 3 inspection, the removal or destruction of permanently attached portions of the chimney or building structure may be necessary.

A Level 2 inspection encompasses all aspects of a Level 1 inspection and extends to the accessible* sections of the chimney exterior and interior, including attics, crawl spaces, and basements. It also addresses proper clearances from combustibles in these accessible locations.
